What you must know about EN 60335-series

When you buy or sell household electrical appliances, you will in all likelihood see the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) and standards EN 60335-1 and EN 60335-2-xx in your technical file. This article explains why the EN 60335-series applies to your product and provides you with an overview of all 60335-standards. 

Low Voltage Directive and more 

All products sold on the European market must comply with product legislation. Electrical household appliances with a 230 Volts connection fall under the scope of the LVD (Directive 2014/35/EU).  For these appliances, the EN 60335 series of standards can be used to show compliance with the safety objectives of the LVD.
Some of the EN 60335 standards are also harmonised under Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. 
The EN 60335 standards can also be applied for battery-powered household appliances.

General requirements of EN 60335-1

The European standard  EN 60335-1 applies to electrical appliances for household environment and commercial purposes (voltage rated not more than 250 V for single-phase and 480 V for others). The standard provides safety rules that the product must comply with. This standard deals with the reasonably foreseeable hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons.

The following points should be highlighted:

• Household environment and commercial purposes also include appliances and machines intended to be used by expert or trained users in shops, light industry and on farms, and appliances and machines which are declared to be for commercial use by lay persons;
  
• Applicability to ‘all persons’ does not include the risk of children playing with the appliance, the use of the appliance by very young children or by young children without supervision. Also, very vulnerable people may have needs beyond the level addressed in this standard. So if you foresee this use of your device, you will have to make a further risk assessment of these risks yourself.

Additional requirements of EN 60335-2-series

To products within the scope, EN 60335-1 is always applicable to the products. However, in addition to the general requirements, there are also specific requirements for certain appliances.  These are covered in the EN 60335-2-series. Harmonises and non-harmonised
